Keywords:-wound healing, Costus afer stem, regeneration of skin, dermal organization, tensile strength.The aim of this study was to investigate the morphometric and histological effects of aqueous extact of Costus afer stem on rat skin wound. Phytochemical analysis of the extract showed the presence of saponin, alkaloids, lignans, terpenes, quinones, stilbenes and flavonoids. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, manganese and phosphorus were also detected in the extract. Twenty-five adult female albino rats with weights between 243-320g were used for the study. The rats were divided equally into 5 groups. They were wounded on their dorsum under ketamine hydrochloride anaesthesia. Immediately hemostasis was attained, the rats were treated according to their groups. Group A wounds were left without treatment, group B were treated only on the first day with iodine ointment, group C were treated for 7days with iodine ointment, group D were treated only on the first day with Costus afer paste, and group E were treated for 7days with Costus afer paste. Using ruler android application, the rate of contraction was not significantly different across the groups and the rate of reepithelialization was significantly highest in group D at p<0.05. the tensile strength measured with tensiometer was significantly highest (p<0.05) in group D at 692.20g. Masson's trichrome sections showed randomly organized collagen fibres in group D and E. There was also indication of growing hair follicles in group D. In conclusion, aqueous extract of Costus afer stem prove to be more effective in wound healing than iodine and its stem juice can be used cautiously for wound treatment.

Medicinal plants have been known as one of the most important therapeutic agents since ancient times. During the last two decades, much attention has been paid to the health-promoting effects of edible medicinal plants, because of multiple beneficial effects and negligible adverse effects. Capparis spinosa L. is one of the most common medicinal plants, used widely in different parts of the world to treat numerous human diseases. This paper aims to critically review the available scientific literature regarding the health-promoting effects of C. spinosa, its traditional uses, cultivation protocols and phytochemical constituents. Recently, a wide range of evidence has shown that this plant possesses different biological effects, including antioxidant, anticancer and antibacterial effects. Phytochemical analysis shows that C. spinosa has high quantities of bioactive constituents, including polyphenolic compounds, which are responsible for its health-promoting effects, although many of these substances are present in low concentrations and significant changes in their content occur during processing. In addition, there is negligible scientific evidence regarding any adverse effects. Different health promotion activities, as well as tremendous diversity of active constituents, make C. spinosa a good candidate for discovering new drugs. However these findings are still in its infancy and future experimental and clinical studies are needed.

Bacterial infections caused by multidrug resistant phenotypes constitute a worldwide health concern. The present study was designed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activities of the methanol extracts of five medicinal plants: Fagara macrophylla, Canarium schweinfurthii, Myrianthus arboreus, Dischistocalyx grandifolius and Tragia benthamii against a panel of 28 multidrug resistant Gram-negative bacterial strains. The liquid broth microdilution was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts. The best activity was recorded with Canarium schweinfurthii bark extract, MIC values ranging from 32 to 1024 µg/mL being recorded against 85.7 % tested bacteria. Broad spectra of antibacterial activities were also obtained with both bark and leaf extracts from Myrianthus arboreus (78.6 %) as well as the bark extract from Fagara macrophylla (75.0 %). The lowest MIC value of 32 µg/mL was obtained with Canarium schweinfurthii bark extract against Klebsiella pneumoniae KP63 strain. The results of this work provide baseline information for the use of the studied plants, and mostly Fagara macrophylla, Canarium schweinfurthii and Myrianthus arboreus in the treatment of bacterial infections including multidrug resistant phenotypes.
