Fixture-scheduling for the Australian Football League using a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm

Abstract: Abstract-AFL football is a team sport that entertains millions and contributes a huge amount of money to the Australian economy. Scheduling games in the AFL is difficult, as a number of different, often conflicting, factors must be considered. In this paper, we propose the use of a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for determining such a schedule. We detail the technical details needed to apply a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to this problem and report on experiments that show the effectiveness o… Show more

“…Barone et al [6] investigate the Australian Football League wrt a number of competing objectives: balancing the number of home games for each team, balancing the sequence of home/away games (as too many consecutive games at home (resp. away) is viewed as unfair), balancing the effects of travel in a large country, maximising profit, and distributing the games across the country on a given weekend.…”

“…In previous work [17], we applied a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm to the fixture scheduling for Australian Rules Football. Results showed that the multiobjective approach was able to produce solutions superior to the existing fixture while still maintaining important constraints imposed by the organising authority, yielding significant improvements in a number of metrics.…”
