Fixed drug eruptions with intraoral presentation

Abstract: Fixed-drug eruption (FDE) is an unusual and rare adverse drug reaction. This type of reaction is actually a delayed type of hypersensitivity reaction that occurs as lesions recurring at the same skin site due to repeated intake of an offending drug. Here is a case report of a 58-year-old male patient who developed intraoral FDEs after ingestion of the first dose of ornidazole.

“…These lesions typically resolve spontaneously after discontinuation of the causative agent but leave a residual hyperpigmentation at the reaction sites. Repeated exposure to the offending drug may cause new lesions to develop in addition to lighting up the older hyperpigmentation lesions [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…It usually occurs within half to 8 hours after the drug is taken. 4 The severity is proportional to the time exposure of the drug and resolves once the offending drug is stopped.…”
