Five‐Component Self‐Assembly of Cucurbituril‐Based Hetero‐pseudorotaxanes

Abstract: Abstract[5]Pseudorotaxanes can be obtained by self‐sorting using heteroditopic guests and various cucurbituril homologues as hosts. The assembly and chemically induced disassembly of the pseudorotaxanes can be monitored by measuring the fluorescence of the anthracene guest in solution. Mass spectral evidence for the supramolecular assemblies is obtained in the gas phase. The disassembly in the gas phase can be achieved by collision‐induced dissociation leading to the corresponding [2]‐ and [3]pseudorotaxanes.

“…The last example of rotaxanes is the work published by Pischel et al [139] where ESI-MS was used to monitor the supramolecular assemblies of hetero [5]pseudorotaxanes with self-assembly of a heteroditopic axle and different cucurbituril(CB) homologs as wheels(CB6, CB7, and CB8). Gasphase studies confirmed the presence of different rotaxanes with CB8: [3]pseudorotaxane with the fully protonated axle, [2]pseudorotaxane with varying charge status and [5]pseudorotaxane composed of two molecules of the heteroditopic axle and three molecules of CB8.…”

“…This technique is recognized to be a powerful tool for the elucidation of cucurbituril-based host-guest systems. [30][31][32][33] Complexes 2:1 and 1:1 are readily seen in the gas phase after spraying an aqueous solution 100 M of 1 and CB7 (1:1 stoichiometry). Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was used to investigate the stability of the complexes formed betweenCB7 and 1.…”
