Fitness Assessment Comparison Between the “Jackie Chan Action Run” Videogame, 1-Mile Run/Walk, and the PACER

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether a correlation existed among the scores of the ''Jackie Chan Studio Fitness Ô Action Run'' active videogame (XaviX Ò , SSD Company, Ltd., Kusatsu, Japan), the 1-mile run/walk, and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) aerobic fitness tests of the FITNESSGRAM Ò (The Cooper Institute, Dallas, TX) in order to provide a potential alternative testing method for days that are not environmentally desirable for outdoor testing. Subjects and … Show more

“…In addition, seven articles compared the differences in the outcome variables between AVGs and laboratory‐based exercise (e.g. walking, cycling) . Similarly, most of the included articles made multiple comparisons between AVGs and laboratory‐based exercises for more than one outcome variable, and these seven articles yielded 66 effect sizes for the analysis.…”

“…Laboratory‐based studies (i.e. highly controlled basic research) support that AVGs acutely induce light‐to‐moderate PA and enhance health indices such as maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2 max) . In comparison, the effects of AVGs on PA and health outcomes in field‐based studies (i.e.…”

“…Exergaming has been studied to quantify energy cost associated with playing active games and increase activities. In a recent study, researchers randomly assigned 108 students between the ages of 10 and 15 years to one of the three experimental groups [40]. The first group used the "Jackie Chan Studio Fitness Action Run", an exergaming environment produced by XaviX; the second group was assigned to the 1-mile run/walk, and the third group utilized the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run program.…”

“…The use of active videogames in exercise testing, however, has received less attention in the literature, with only one publication to date. 4 A key determinant of performance in field-based exercise tests, particularly those that are self-paced, may be an individual's motivation. 5 Self-paced field-based exercise tests are often used as a valuable tool in clinical situations where laboratory testing is not an option.…”
