Fishnet-Based Metamaterials: Spectral Tuning Through Adsorption Mechanism

Abstract: In this work we consider the tuning of spectral reflectance of fishnet metamaterials with circular or elliptic apertures due to the presence of dielectric analyte adsorbed within the pores of the dielectric part. We simulated the electromagnetic response of the fishnet metamaterials for the optical range utilizing the finite element method. Our investigation is dedicated to ultrathin, freestanding laminated structures (metal-dielectric-metal self-supported nanomembrane sandwiches with nanometric thickness). We… Show more

“…The resulting freestanding structure is equivalent to double-layer fishnet metamaterials. 69 In our previous work we considered the fabrication of freestanding double-fishnet negative index metamaterials in a nanomembrane scaffold. Such geometry ensures a fully symmetrical structure without a substrate.…”

“…83 In our work we chose a different approach and analyzed double fishnets in metal-dielectric-metal freestanding sandwich nanomembranes, where apertures are opened by focused ion beam lithography. 69 One should mention that planar multilayer structures with metal cladding also ensure negative group velocity of some modes. In addition to that, they enable crossing of light line in some of these modes, i.e., support direct excitation of plasmons by propagating modes.…”

“…Nanocomposites based on two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength apertures in conductive material represent probably the most important class of metamaterials for the optical wavelength range. An example of such artificial structures is the fishnet metamaterials, which are the structures of choice for achieving negative value of effective refractive index in the optical range [1][2][3]. Another example is the extraordinary transmission arrays [4][5][6], where subwavelength apertures ensure, contraintuitively, an almost 100% optical transmission in a wavelength range determined by the surface plasmon resonance effects.…”
