Fish passage system in an irrigation dam (Pilcomayo River basin ): when engineering designs do not match ecohydraulic criteria

Abstract: The Route 28 Dam has the potential to block fish movements from La Estrella marsh to the Pilcomayo River. In addition, the many fish that concentrate immediately downstream of the dam may suffer high mortality when they are stranded during low water periods. The goals of this study are to determine if fish are able to pass the spillway and to assess if the design of the installed ladders (pool and weir type) effectively supports upstream migration of Prochilodus lineatus (sábalo). Results showed that only fish… Show more

“…The anadromous catfish Genidens barbus was one of the most economically important species in estuaries from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean (Reis 1986;Tavares and Luque 2004;Velasco et al 2007;MINAGRO 2018). The catfish has been included in the Red List of endangered species in Brazil (MMA 2014;Di Dario et al 2015) and was classified as vulnerable in Argentina (Baigún et al 2012). Then, its marketing and fishing have been prohibited since 2015 in Brazilian fishing areas (MMA 2014;Di Dario et al 2015), due to a constant and marked decrease in catches caused by poor management policies and over-exploitation.…”

“…Artificial barriers, such as dams, can affect the natural flow regime vari-ability with direct impacts on the eco-morphological state of rivers (Allan and Castillo, 2007;Sponseller et al, 2013). Maintaining the natural conditions of rivers is a multidisciplinary concern and artificial interventions require the consideration of ecological and morphological site evaluations (Bain et al, 1999).…”

“…One of the most cited impacts of these dams is on long-distance migratory fish species, the completion of their life cycle e190118 [2] depending on river connectivity (Anderson et al, 2018), preservation of the hydrological cycle (Lima et al, 2017) and the availability of suitable upstream spawning habitats (Barthem et al, 2017). These impacts on migratory fish are difficult to mitigate, although there is past and ongoing research and experimentation on fishways performance (Godinho, Kynard, 2009;Baigún et al, 2012). Given the low efficiency of these systems for Neotropical species (Oldani et al, 2007;Baigún et al, 2007;Pompeu et al, 2012;Lira et al, 2017), in some cases aquaculture has been proposed as mitigation strategy, even though this activity may affect fisheries resources indirectly (see, for example, Pelicice et al, 2014;Montanhini Neto et al, 2015).…”
