Fish meal replacement by soy protein from soymilk in the diets of red sea bream (Pagrus major)

Abstract: Six isoenergetic diets were formulated as follows: fish meal (FM) 700 g kg -1 (control, C), FM 300 g kg -1 + soy protein concentrate 300 g kg -1 (SPC), FM 300 g kg -1 + enzyme-treated SPC 300 g kg -1 (ESC), FM 170 g kg -1 + soy protein isolate 300 g kg -1 (SPI), FM 160 g kg -1 + enzyme-treated SPI 300 g kg -1 (ESI) and FM 150 g kg -1 + conglycinin 300 g kg -1 (CG). Forty fish (3.9 g) were randomly distributed into each of eighteen 300-L tanks, fed twice daily until satiation for 8 weeks. The final body weight,… Show more

“…The inclusion of 34% of soybean meal in the diet for S. hasta juveniles caused anaemia due to a decrease in red blood cell counts and haematocrit (Yaghoubi et al, ). Soybean subjected to microbial hydrolysis and used to replace fishmeal had no effects on the red blood cells of P. major (Biswas et al, ). Perhaps, the better metabolic utilization of the peptides found in HSM contribute to the maintenance of erythropoiesis in fish.…”

“…It also contains low levels of trypsin inhibitor activity (Anderson & Wolf, ). SPC has been tested in fish feeds of several species (Berge, Grisdale Helland, & Helland, ; Biswas et al, ; Deng et al, ; Kissinger, García‐Ortega, & Trushenski, ). The superior nutritional quality of SPC than SBM has been reported in rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ; Kaushik et al, 1995).…”

“…The superior nutritional quality of SPC than SBM has been reported in rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ; Kaushik et al, 1995). In red sea bream, 50%–66% of FM protein could be replaced with SPC without any negative effects on its growth performance (Biswas et al, ; Hossain & Koshio, ). In contrast, the use of over 66% dietary SPC caused significant growth retardation in red sea bream, which was associated with low‐feed intake (Hossain & Koshio, ; Kader et al, ; Kalhoro et al ).…”

“…Nutrient deficiencies such as essential amino acids, taurine and phospholipids lead to the unsuccessful fish meal replacement especially for marine carnivorous fish (Koven, Peduel, Gada, Nixon & Ucko, ; Sales, ). However, in the formulation of soybean products‐based feed where low fish meal was used, studies have shown that the supplementation of ingredients such as corn gluten meal, taurine and lecithin is important (Biswas et al., ; Deng et al., ; Kato et al., ; Luo et al., ; Pereira & Oliva‐Teles, ; Sevgili et al., ). Corn gluten meal has high availability of amino acid to fish such as methionine and lysine and was suggested to improve the imbalance of essential amino acid in soybean meal (NRC ).…”
