Fish Bone Impaction Using Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE)

Abstract: This paper presents the enhancement capability of adaptive histogram equalization (AHE) on the soft tissue lateral neck radiograph for suspected fish bone ingestion. Embedded fish bone lodge in the throat is not easily visible in unprocessed plain radiograph. Serious complication may cause perforation of the lodged and inflammation that can progress to abscess. Forty X-ray images of 23 male and 17 female patients between the ages of 6 to 72 years from different ethnic groups were collected from Hospital Sungai… Show more

“…Image is divided into non-overlapping blocks of fixed sizes and each block is treated with HE for individual block contrast improvement. But this method suffers from blocking artefacts which in [17], the authors used bilinear interpolation which for low-contrast images like ours proves ineffective.…”

“…Delay in treatment can lead to unwanted and serious complications (5). Sequelae such as perforation of pharynx, vocal cord fixation, migration of fish bone into common hepatic duct, transverse colon perforation and piercing migrated fish bone in the neck have been reported (6). Management of fish bone ingestion can be very straight forward, whereby it can be easily removed in clinic setting without any complication especially from the base of tongue, vallecula or in the palatine tonsil(4).…”

“…Initiative to overcome the above problems had been done by applying image processing methods such as image enhancement [9][10][11]. Image enhancement is the process of modifying images that enhance visual content to improve human or machine perception [12].…”

“…Previous works shows that IEAs have been applied to dental images. Example of IEAs algorithms applied are smoothing filters, sharpening filter, negative filter, histogram equalization (HE) and adaptive histogram equalization (AHE) [10], [22], [25]. However, current investigation is limited in sense of; comparing between filmed based and digitized dental images and comparing with and without enhancement algorithms between original and enhanced images only.…”
