Fish Assemblage Relationships with Physical Habitat in Wadeable Iowa Streams

Abstract: Fish assemblages play a key role in stream ecosystems and are influenced by physical habitat. We analyzed fish assemblages and physical habitat at 93 randomly selected sites on second‐ through fifth‐order wadeable Iowa streams to explore fish assemblage relationships with reach‐scale physical habitat in this agriculturally dominated landscape. Sites were sampled using DC electrofishing and the wadeable streams physical habitat protocol of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring and … Show more

“…The influence of instream physical habitat features (e.g., depth and substrate composition) on food, refuge, and spawning habitat availability is easy to conceptualize, and their influence on fish assemblages is well studied (Fischer and Paukert 2008;Rowe et al 2009b). Thus, many studies have used instream habitat variables to explain the distribution or abundance of fish species (e.g., Hubert and Rahel 1989;Quist et al 2005;Rashleigh et al 2005).…”

“…어류 군집구 조에 영향을 미치는 물리 환경 요인으로서 유속, 수 심, 하상 재질, 식생 등이 중요하다 (Gorman and Karr, 1978;Angermeier and Karr, 1983;Poff and Allan, 1995;Rowe et al, 2009), 이러한 물리적 서식지 환 경은 고도와 하상 경사와 밀접한 관계를 가진다 (Maret et al, 1997). 수질로서 중요한 환경 요인은 수온, 용 존산소, 부유물질, 영양소, 오염물질 등이 있다 (Lenat and Crawford, 1994;Meador and Goldstein, 2003).…”

“…하천에서 어류 군집은 다양한 환경 중에서 물리적 환경에 큰 영향을 받는다 (Wang et al, 2003;Rowe et al, 2009). 특히 하상 재료, 정수와 여울 구간의 발달, 유량의 안정성 등은 어류 다양성과 깊은 관계 를 가진다 (Gorman and Karr, 1978;Milner et al, 1985).…”

“…Physico-chemical (e.g., temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and pH) (Araújo et al, 2009), and other environmental variables such as landscape features (Angermeier & Winston, 1999), pool/riffle distribution and dimensions, and the amount of available cover can correlate strongly with fish assemblages (Schlosser, 1982;Brown, 2000;Fischer & Paukert, 2008;Rowe et al, 2009a). The concentration of dissolved oxygen, temperature, water velocity, and substrate composition have also been shown to deterministically affect fish assemblage structure in tropical floodplain systems (Daga et al, 2012).…”
