Effects of Habitat Disturbance on Fish Community Structure in a Gravel-Bed Stream, Korea

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Fish assemblages play an integral role in stream ecosystem and are influenced by stream environmental conditions and habitat disturbances. Fish community structures and habitat parameters of U.S. EPA rapid bio-assessment protocol were surveyed to investigate the effect of stream environment and habitat disturbance on fish communities at 13 study sites in the Gapyeong Stream, a typical gravel-bed stream. Principal component analysis (PCA) based on data from habitat assessment at each study site indicat… Show more

“…This is because higher magnitude disturbances can tip an ecosystem over a threshold, causing it to enter an alternative stable state (Odion, Moritz, & DellaSala, 2010;Parsons, McLoughlin, Rountree, & Rogers, 2006;Robinson & Uehlinger, 2008), whereas weaker events, although being more frequent, may not have the magnitude to induce This study also provides unique insights into the impact of rare, extreme floods by employing two, multiscaled approaches. First, we employed a fluvial biogeomorphic framework in which various components (vegetation, hydrology, and geomorphology) are considered together in the analysis (Corenblit et al, 2007(Corenblit et al, , 2015Jerin, 2019;Kim et al, 2020;Kim & Kupfer, 2016;Tabacchi et al, 2019;Woo et al, 2019). This paper shows how these components interact and influence each other during the disturbance event.…”

“…Since the taxa differ depending on the type of habitat, classification of habitats is essential before surveying the biota. Accordingly, detailed habitat type classification and area determination studies were performed for 21 NPs in Korea, excluding Jeju‐do (Kim et al 2021; Korea National Park Research Institute 2019). Therefore, if the similarity of each NP is measured using the data that divides the area of each NP by habitat type, NPs with high similarity in the number of specific habitats will be grouped together and have a tendency to have numerous similarities with the distribution similarity of species.…”
