“…By using ion exchange strategy, we have successfully isolated and structurally characterized hitherto unknown anions: [Hg 2 (SCN) 7 ] 3- [13], [HgBr 5 ] 3- [14], [HgBr 4 Cl] 3- [15], [CdBr 4 Cl 2 ] 4- [16], [CdBr 4 benzoate] 3- [17] and [Cd 2 X 7 ] 3- [18] with appropriate large cation i.e. cationic metal complex.…”

“…In our earlier investigations, we have reported the synthesis and structural characterization of new anions [Hg 2 (SCN) 7 ] 3− [5] and [HgBr 5 ] 3− [6] with the help of hexamminecobalt(III) cation and it was envisaged that shape and charge on the complex cation [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ is conducive for the formation of such anions of hitherto unknown. Our experience with hexamminecobalt(III) cation prompted us to examine whether it is possible to isolate new halogenidomercurate(II) anions similar to [HgBr 5 ] 3− but having the mixed halogens like [HgBr 4 Cl] 3− or [HgBr 3-Cl 2 ] 3− or similar kind.…”

“…Cl) from the symmetrical [HgBr 5 ] 3− ion. During our successful isolation of [HgBr 5 ] 3− anion, we have made the observation that it is possible to transfer one of the bromide ions of [Co (NH 3 ) 6 ]Br 3 to the first coordination sphere of [HgBr 4 ] 2− , resulting the formation of [HgBr 5 ] 3− anion. In an analogous way, we envisaged that the use of another complex [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3 which has very similar charge and topology may also transfer one of its chloride ion to the [HgBr 4 ] 2− that would lead to the formation of a mixed halogenidomercurate(II) anion which may have square pyramidal or trigonal bipyramidal geometry.…”
