The neutron production in thick targets irradiated with 1 GeV protons was studied experimentally, and results are well understood with model calculations, including MCNPX 2.7a. However, one observes very large neutron production rates in the interaction of 44 GeV 12C onto thick Cu-, Pb-, and U-targets beyond calculated rates. The experimental spallation product yield curve in a 20 cm thick Cu target irradiated with 72 GeV 40Ar also cannot be reproduced by several model codes, including MCNPX 2.7a. This may be due to secondary fragments produced in high energy ( GeV) heavy-ion interactions which destroy target nuclei more effectively than primary ions. These observed experimental facts constitute “unresolved problems” from a fundamental point of view. It may have an impact on radiation protection issues for future heavy-ion accelerators.

Xe-128 in I-127 transmutation targets irradiated by Xi'an pulse reactor was analyzed by using Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (QMS) to calculate transmutation rate and release rate. Transmutation is an alternative method to transform long-lived toxic radio nuclides to short-lived radio nuclides or stable nuclides. 127 I targets were irradiated in Xi'an Pulse Reactor for the first time to simulate the transmutation behavior of 129 I. After irradiation, 128 Xe in the target was determinate with online isotope dilution method by Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (QMS), so that the transmutation rate and release rate could be calculated. Release behaviors of 128 Xe were investigated through melting and step-heated modes. The stepwise heating experiment was done by puncturing method. The result shows the release rate in melting mode is 99.9% (RSD ¼ 1%) and increases with the temperature in stepwise heating mode. The technique proposed in this work is suitable for accurate determination of transmutation rate of 129 I.

The significant quantities of highly radiotoxic long-lived nuclear waste necessitate the research of methods of their transmutation to short-lived ones. This can be achieved by interaction between nuclear waste and neutrons (n,xn)-reactions and radiative captive). The ADS (Accelerator Driven System) is the most promising tool for such transmutation. ADS consists of powerful high energy accelerator irradiating a target of heavy nuclei: uranium, thorium, lead and bismuth. Inside of the target is generated a high-energy neutron field. Several ADS constructions for waste transmutation and energy production are considered. The influence of the cooling system on the neutron flux and the energy production in ADS are investigated. The radiation and biological protection are also discussed.
