First Results of Pellet Injection Experiments on EAST

Abstract: A new pellet injection system was installed on the EAST tokamak and preliminary experiments were performed during the 2012 run campaign. Typical phenomena associated with deuterium pellet injection into a plasma discharge have been observed including sudden increases of the electron density and Hα/Dα emission intensity as well as a significant decrease in plasma electron temperature. Profiles have been studied in order to understand the influence of pellet fuelling on EAST discharges. Even though the injector … Show more

“…Since 2012, a PI system [31] with the frequency of 10 Hz has been installed on EAST. During subsequent pellet experiments, which are usually performed with the fueling effect [31] and ELM triggering [32], many interesting and novel results concerning L-H transition have been obtained [33]. Similar to the dithering cycles mentioned above, dithering-like cycles induced by deuterium PI have also been observed during 2018 campaigns on EAST tokamak.…”

“…Since 2014, the EAST has been investigating ELM control with the most existing methods, including resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs), 41 pellet pacing, 42 supersonic molecular beam injection, 43 LHWs, 44 and Li pellet injection, 45 allowing it to achieve long-pulse steady-state operation. The nonlinear transition from mitigation to suppression of the ELMs by using RMPs was first observed in the EAST in 2016.…”

“…The pellet injector, based on a screw extruder, is able to fire pellets in the steady-state mode with a reliability greater than 95%. Typical phenomena such as ELM triggering and electron temperature drop, which are associated with deuterium pellet injection experiments, have been observed and summarized in a previous work [8]. This paper mainly focuses on the temporary divertor plasma detachment with MARFE events induced by pellet injection.…”
