First results of a pseudo-Abbe comparator for precision length and diameter measurements

Abstract: High-precision length and form measurements at the top of the traceability chain are mandatory to support industrial metrology with form and length embodiments which are calibrated with the lowest possible measurement uncertainties. Therefore, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt has replaced an old reference comparator by a new reference measurement system to ensure that this service can be provided safely in the future. The design of the system follows the principle of a pseudo-Abbe comparator. First, measu… Show more

“…Abbe principle is guiding methods for instrument design. The expression of this principle is: 'in order for the measuring instrument to give accurate measurement results, the measured object must be arranged on the extension line of the reference element along the moving direction' [28]. We name the design that does not meet the collinearity principle as an anti-Abbe structure.…”

“…In another group of contributions for this special issue, new measurement instruments or application of new measurement methods are described. In the publication by Hesse et al [11] the design and realisation of a new pseudo-Abbe comparator for precision length and diameter measurements is explained and first measurement results are presented. The instrument is based on two cylinder form measuring machines equipped with tactile probing systems and an additional integrated laser interferometry-based length measuring system.…”
