First report on Enterobacter sp. causing soft rot of Amorphophallus konjac in China

Abstract: In summer 2010, stems and corms of Amorphophallus konjac with soft rot were collected in Hubei Province, China. Plants were inoculated with the isolated bacterium and developed the same symptoms, and the reisolated pathogen was identified as Enterobacter sp., based on morphology, pathogenicity and 16S rDNA sequence analysis.

“…Both bacterial species are in the soft rot Pectobacteriaceae (SRP) family. Recently, Enterobacter asburiae was found to cause mulberry wilt disease and soft rot on Amorphophallus konjac in China (Wang et al, 2010;Wu et al, 2011). E. asburiae is a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, oxidase negative, non-motile, and non-pigmented rod-shaped species isolated from soil, water, and food products and previously known as an epiphytic bacteria (Lau et al, 2014).…”

“…Enterobacter has been reported to cause soft rot of papaya, amorphophallus konjac and potato, [37][38][39] Klebsiella has been reported to cause soft rot of carrot and pepper, 40,41 Pseudomonas has been reported to cause soft rot of pepper, carrot and melon [42][43][44] and Bacillus has also been reported to cause soft rot of pepper and ginger rhizome. 1,45,46 Therefore, in order to reduce losses of postharvest peppers, Pectobacterium is not the only control target, but the most important one.…”

“…However, some of them have been reported as phytopathogens, such as Enterobacter asburiae isolated from konjac ( Amorphophallus konjac ) in China and Enterobacter cloacae isolated from chili pepper ( Capsicum annuum L.) and dragon fruit ( Hylocereus spp.) ( 4 7 ). Identification of the order Enterobacteriales has been difficult with the 16S rRNA gene approach and other single-gene and limited multigene approaches ( 2 ).…”
