First report of the genus Brachylaima Dujardin, 1843 (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae)from the small intestine of common myna (Acridotheres tristis) of district Swabi,Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Abstract

It is commonly called "farmer's friend" because it feeds on insects that harm crop plants (Ponnudurai et al., 2009), which makes it more susceptible to parasitic infections (Singh, 2014). Being entomophagous, arthropod-borne helminthic infections are common (Ponnudurai et al., 2009;Borji and Razmyar, 2011;Singh, 2014). It also feeds on snails and slugs, which act as first and second intermediate hosts of trematodes. The present study was therefore conducted to elucidate the trematode fauna of the common myna in this area and to add more information to the existing knowledge.Brachylaimidae is a large family of digenetic trematodes, including seven genera and numerous species, with worldwide distribution (Sirgel et al., 2010(Sirgel et al., , 2012. They are the principle endoparasites of endothermic vertebrates including birds, mammals, and even human beings (Lunaschi and Drago, 2012).
