Diversity of Deep-Sea Echinoderms From Costa Rica

Echinoderms are a highly diverse group and one of the most conspicuous in the deep sea, playing ecological key roles. We present a review about the history of expeditions and studies on deep-sea echinoderms in Costa Rica, including an updated list of species. We used literature and information gathered from the databases of the California Academy of Sciences, the Benthic Invertebrate Collection of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the National Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Comparative Zoology and the Museo de Zoología from the Universidad de Costa Rica. A total of 124 taxa (75 confirmed species) have been collected from the Costa Rican deep sea, 112 found in the Pacific Ocean, 13 in the Caribbean Sea, and one species shared between the two basins. We report 22 new records for the Eastern Tropical Pacific, 46 for Central American waters, and 58 for Costa Rica. The most specious group was Ophiuroidea with 37 taxa, followed by Holothuroidea (34 taxa), Asteroidea (23 taxa), Echinoidea (17 taxa), and Crinoidea (11 taxa). The highest number of species (64) was found between 800 m and 1200 m depth. Only two species were found deeper than 3200 m. Further efforts on identification will be required for a better comprehension of the diversity of deep-sea echinoderms. Limited research has been done regarding the biology and ecology of deep-sea echinoderms in Costa Rica, so additional approaches will be necessary to understand their ecological functions.

Submarine canyons have a relevant role in marine ecosystems. They are responsible for oceanographic conditions such as variability of temperature and salinity, sediment transport, nutrients, and even pollutants amongst marine areas. Submarine canyon studies have been growing and reaching prominence due to their importance in the Blue Economy. Initiatives to promote sustainable development for the ocean have been discussed in the Ocean Decade. Although canyons studies are increasing, how can we integrate these with the Ocean Decade outcomes? Thus, we aim to demonstrate an overview of the advances of submarine canyons studies and their link to the Ocean Decade for South America. We analyzed 160 studies divided into spatiotemporal analysis and study approaches according to the Ocean Decade outcomes. We discuss these articles, building a timeline and argumentative topics considering the advances, and discuss gaps to predict the future of submarine canyons studies in the Ocean Decade and Blue Economy context.

New epibiotic association in the deep-sea: the amphipod Caprella ungulina and the Patagonian lobsterette Thymops birsteini in the South-western Atlantic

The present study reports for the first time the association between the decapod Thymops birsteini (Nephropidae) and the amphipod Caprella ungulina (Caprellidae). A benthic biodiversity survey was carried out to explore the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, off the Argentine coast, in the South-western Atlantic Ocean. A total of 205 caprellids (181 juveniles, 4 males and 20 not-classified individuals) were found attached to 7 specimens of T. birsteini caught between 1087–2212 m depth. The epibiotic parameters showed that the prevalence of C. ungulina on T. birsteini was 50%; the mean abundance was 14.64 and the intensity value was 29.29. In addition, specimens of C. ungulina were recorded mainly on mouthparts of T. birsteini (31.22%), followed by chelipeds (18.05%), cephalothorax (4.88%) and pereiopods (0.98%). Our finding of C. ungulina provides the deepest record until now; additionally, this epibiont is reported in a new host belonging to an infraorder and a family of crustacean that had not previously been found as basibionts. The potential mechanisms implied in the wide distribution of C. ungulina are discussed.
