First Report of Banana mild mosaic virus Isolated from Plantains (Musa AAB) in Colombia

Abstract: Plantains (Musa AAB) are important sources of food and income for millions of people in Colombia and other developing countries. Colombia is the largest producer of plantains (2) and the third largest exporter of bananas in the world. In 2001, plants of ‘Dominico-Hartón’ plantain showing mild chlorotic streak symptoms were observed in northwestern Colombia. Electron microscopy of symptomatic tissue extracts revealed the presence of filamentous virus-like particles approximately 800 nm long. Immunocapture rever… Show more

“…In addition, during mixed infections between BanMMV and BSVs or CMV, often encountered in plantation, symptoms of BanMMV are masked by those caused by other viruses (Lockhart, 2002;Reichel et al, 2003). Banana bunchy top virus, BSVs and BanMMV are associated with the genus Musa (Kumar et al, 2014) while CMV has an extremely wide host range with over 1,200 plant species representing 100 plant families (Jacquemond, 2012).…”

“…Viruses are assuming greater importance in Musa cultivation due to the current worldwide movement of its germplasm. Among viruses reported to infect banana, banana streak virus (BSV), banana mild mosaic virus (BanMMV), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and banana bract mosaic virus (BBrMV) have been detected in this crop in south America (Bhat et al 2016;Reichel et al 2003;Eiras et al 2004;Quito-Avila et al 2013). CMV is one of the most important plant viruses, infecting more than 1000 plant species worldwide (Jacquemond 2012).…”
