First Report of Aleurocanthus spiniferus on Ailanthus altissima: Profiling of the Insect Microbiome and MicroRNAs

Abstract: We report the first occurrence of the orange spiny whitefly (Aleurocanthus spiniferus; OSW) on the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) in Bari, Apulia region, Italy. After our first observation in 2016, the infestation recurred regularly during the following years and expanded to the neighboring trees. Since then, we have also found the insect on numerous patches of the tree of heaven and other plant species in the Bari province. Nevertheless, the tree of heaven was not particularly threatened by the insect, … Show more

“…Functional characterisation of the genes involved in the chitin biosynthetic pathway had been conducted on trehalase [ 60 ], chitin synthase [ 73 ], glucose-6-phosphate isomerase and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase [ 74 ]. In addition, further transcriptomics analysis to discover the presences of parasitoid, bacteria, and viruses in an organism can be done by deep transcriptomics of small RNAs (sRNAs) [ 75 ]. Aside from discovering natural enemies of M. plana through this technique, it is also possible to discover heritable bacterial symbionts, which help insects in obtaining nutrients [ 76 ], resistance against natural enemies [ 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 ] or in altering the reproductivity of the host [ 79 ].…”

“…Aleurocanthus spiniferus is an alien invasive Aleyrodidae, representing the new key pest for Citrus spp. orchards in Apulia [188,189]. Few whitefly adults were occasionally preyed upon [51].…”

“…Luckily enough, functional human-managed host plants' ecological corridors also facilitate the acclimation and spread of useful alien pest antagonists [52] that are a possible option for biocontrol action [53,54]. Unfortunately, the long time to react in case of alien organism entrance [55][56][57] causes relevant damage to target plants.…”
