First record of Triaenodes bicolor (Curtis, 1834) (Insecta: Trichoptera) from the Ecoregion Hellenic Western Balkans

Abstract: We collected adult caddisfly specimens with entomological nets and ultraviolet light traps monthly from May to November 2012 in Brezne Lake situated in Dragash Municipality. During this investigation we found the Leptocerid species Triaenodes bicolor for the first time in Kosovo; it is also the first record for Ecoregion 6, Hellenic Western Balkans. Additionally, this is the first record of the genus Triaenodes from Kosovo. In total seven males and three females of this species were found. Triaenodes bicolor i… Show more

“…Only three species of the genus Triaenodes have been found in Europe (Malicky 2004): T. bicolor (Curtis, 1834), T. ochreellus McLachlan, 1877 and T. unanimis McLachlan 1877 (Malicky 2004;Morse 2020). Only the species T. ochreellus has two subspecies: T. ochreellus ochreellus and T. ochrellus lefkas Malicky, 1974(Ibrahimi et al 2017Malicky 2004Malicky , 2005bMorse 2020). The adult has a thin body of small to medium size, with long antennae (Holzenthal et al 2007).…”

“…The adult has a thin body of small to medium size, with long antennae (Holzenthal et al 2007). Larvae of Triaenodes species live in different types of habitats, especially in lentic aquatic biotopes, usually with aquatic vegetation (Ibrahimi et al 2017;Wiggins 1978). They have elongated posterior legs with long setae, known as swimming paddles (Wiggins 1978).…”

“…Material sampled in Serbia during the last 25 years is deposited in the collection of the Institute of Zoology, University of Belgrade-Faculty of Biology. In order to include the largest part of the area in the analysis, additional records of two species were obtained from the literature, considering neighboring countries [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41]. All occurrence points were georeferenced for the purposes of this study and presented in Table S1 (Table S1: Trichoptera occurrence points).…”

“…The knowledge about the caddisflies of the Balkan Peninsula has increased significantly over the past years with the description of several new species and records of other rare species of this order of aquatic insects. In this regard the caddisflies of Kosovo are relatively well investigated (Ibrahimi & Sejdiu, 2018;Ibrahimi & Vehapi, 2017;Ibrahimi, Kučinić, Gashi, & Grapci-Kotori, 2014;2015a, 2015b, 2016a, 2016b, 2019a, 2019b, 2023Ibrahimi, Kuçi, Bilalli, & Gashi, 2017b;Karaouzas et al, 2018;Oláh, Chvojka, Cubuc, Coppa, & Ibrahimi, 2015;; followed by North Macedonia (e.g., Bilalli, Ibrahimi, & Musliu, 2018;Bilalli et al, 2019;Hinić et al, 2020;Musliu et al, 2020;Oláh et al, 2022;Slavevska-Stamenković et al, 2016Valladolid et al, 2022); Albania Oláh & Beshkov, 2016;Oláh et al, 2022); Serbia (Ibrahimi, Jahiji, & Bilalli, 2017a;Ibrahimi et al, 2022;Oláh et al, , 2019Oláh et al, , 2022Stojanović et al, 2015) and Montenegro (Ibrahimi, Pali, Bilalli, & Musliu, 2019e;Oláh & Beshkov, 2016;Oláh & Kovács, 2014).…”
