DNA barcoding and a new taxonomic status of the Triaenodes ochreellus lefkas Malicky, 1974 (Insecta, Trichoptera) with new distribution data

Abstract: In this paper new data on distribution and new taxonomic status of the caddisfly Triaenodes ochreellus lefkas are given. DNA barcoding data are also included into defining new status of the species Triaenodes lefkas stat. nov. Data from DNA barcoding analyses of 60 specimens from the genus Triaenodes from the BOLD database show certain taxonomic peculiarities in specimens of T. unanimis from Japan.

“…These values fit well within the intraspecific variability of mtCOI usually observed in caddisflies (Pauls et al 2009(Pauls et al , 2010Previšić et al 2009Previšić et al , 2014. Moreover, the uncorrected p-distances based on the mtCOI gene of these two individuals and other previously sequenced European specimens are in line with interspecific distances commonly reported in Leptoceridae (Kučinić et al 2020;Ruiz-García et al 2022).…”

“…These values fit well within the intraspecific variability of mtCOI usually observed in caddisflies (Pauls et al 2009(Pauls et al , 2010Previšić et al 2009Previšić et al , 2014Graf et al 2015). Moreover, the uncorrected p-distances based on the mtCOI gene of these three individuals, a specimen of E. schachti from Portugal, and an E. baltica specimen from Finland (Table 1) are in line with interspecific distances commonly reported in Leptoceridae (Kučinić et al 2020). Thus, the data enable confident association of the larva and the adult of E. schachti.…”

“…Faunistically, the most interesting species in the study area are: R. d. plitvicensis, G. discophorum, H. vichtaspa, A. sexmaculata, T. minor, E. ivkae, L. sparsus, P.nigricornis, H. infumatu, Leptocerus interruptus, T. lefkas, O. lacustris (Graf et al 2008a;Kučinić et al 2020aKučinić et al , 2020bMalicky, 2014a;Previšić et al 2014;Vučković, 2011;Waringer et al 2009). The species A. sexmaculata, T. minor, L. sparsus, P. nigricornis, H. infumatus, L. interruptus and O. lacustris were recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean part of Croatia, and the Cetina River has been identified as the westernmost point of the distribution area of the species T. lefkas (Kučinić et al 2020a).…”

“…200 caddisfly species have been recorded (Ćuk & Vučković 2009(Ćuk & Vučković , 2010Graf et al 2008a;Kučinić 2002;Kučinić & Ilić 1993a, 1993bKučinić & Malicky 2002;Kučinić et al 1999Kučinić et al , 2000Kučinić et al , 2011Malicky 2009;Malicky & Krušnik 1988;Malicky et al 2007;Previšić & Popijač 2010;Previšić et al 2007aPrevišić et al , 2007bPrevišić et al , 2014Urbanič et al 2000;Waringer et al 2009). In the last few years the DNA barcoding method has been included in many studies of the caddisfly fauna of Croatia (Ćukušić, 2019;Ćukušić et al 2017;Kučinić et al 2013Kučinić et al , 2019aKučinić et al , 2019bKučinić et al , 2019cKučinić et al , 2020aKučinić et al , 2020b The objectives of this paper were to determine faunistic features of caddisflies (1), caddisfly ecology and distribution in the study area (2) and give a note on results of the DNA barcoding of some species (3).…”
