First record of Leucospis bifasciata Klug (Hymenoptera: Leucospidae) in Iraq

Abstract: A BS TRA CT . The family Leucospidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) are the largest chalcidoid wasps with some distinct morphological characters. During insect collection of the Faculty of Agriculture in Karbala, Leucospis bifasciata Klug, 1814 was collected in 2019. It was collected using sweep nets. This is the first record of L. bifasciata from Iraq. Including previously recorded L. dorsigera Fabricius, Leucospidae of Iraq reaches to two species.

The ovipositor of the female (Leucospidae) is sometimes very short, otherwise it is curved and extends along the dorsal part of the abdomen. The males have the peculiarity that the segments of the metasoma form a kind of capsule or shell. The female deposits an egg on or near the prey. When the larva hatches, it first seeks out and kills any competitors and only then begins to feed on the host. The objective of this article is to deal with the animal behavior of the Leucospidae Family. For this, a bibliographic survey of Leucospidae was carried out in the years 1883 to 2022. Only complete articles published in scientific journals and expanded abstracts presented in national and international scientific events were considered. Data were also obtained from platforms such as: Academia.edu, Frontiers, Qeios, Pubmed, Biological Abstract, Publons, Dialnet, World, Wide Science, Springer, RefSeek, Microsoft Academic and Science.

During the several visits in 2018 and 2019 to some areas surrounding Central Marsh in southern Iraq (CMSI) for conservation purposes. The fauna of insects from different sites and sessions of the CMSI are surveyed in this study; there were (18) species, (17) genera that belong to (16) families and (7) orders which are recorded in this investigation using sweeping nets and light traps. According to available references, 7 species are new records in the area of study. This is survey is important for updating insects diversity in central Marshlands in Iraq. A counting study is needed to understand more about insect distributions and their impacts on biodiversity in such an important area.

An overview of the family Leucospidae (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea) is provided for the leucospid fauna of the Arabian Peninsula. Two genera containing four species are identified based on morphometrics and colour patterns. One species, Leucospis ayezae Usman, Anwar & Ahmad, sp. nov., is described. Leucospis elegans Klug had been previously recorded from Arabia Felix (= Yemen) and is recorded here for the first time from Saudi Arabia. The status of Leucospis aff. namibica from Yemen has been clarified, and this species is placed here in the genus Micrapion Kriechbaumer as M. clavaforme Steffan. An updated key and a map showing the distribution of the family Leucospidae in the Arabian Peninsula is provided. The occurrence and color morphs of all leucospid species that have been recorded so far from the region are briefly discussed.
