First-Order Methods for Energy-Efficient Power Control in Cell-Free Massive MIMO : Invited Paper

Abstract: This paper considers a cell-free massive MIMO system with multiple-antenna access points and single-antenna users. The APs use conjugate beamforming to beamform the data to all users in the network. Total energy efficiency maximization is investigated. This optimization problem is nonconvex and thus difficult to solve. Existing solutions are based on second-order optimization methods in connection with convex approximations. These methods have been shown to perform very well but their complexity does not scale… Show more

“…where E CB k (ξ) is exhibited in (11) and S denotes the feasible set of ξ. It remarks that the objective function f (ξ) is non-differentiable with respect to ξ and the APG method cannot be directly employed to solve problem H CB [30]- [32]. Fortunately, a smoothing technique can be utilized to tackle this issue by recalling a log-sum-exp function [36]…”

“…to H CB can be determined by implementing the monotone APG method [30]- [32] outlined in Algorithm 1, provided that a sufficiently large λ is available. We detail this algorithm at the top of the next page and denote the corresponding optimal HE for the CB scheme as E CB-Opt f ξ Opt , where ξ Opt is the optimal solution to H CB .…”

“…Centralized deep learning-based power control strategies that get closer to the optimal MMF have been proposed in [128][129][130]. Methods for downlink power control are investigated in [131,132] aiming to reduce the complexity of existing solutions based on second-order optimization. Partial distributed downlink power control schemes based on inverse leakage and successive convex approximation are proposed in [133].…”

“…To this end, we propose a novel low-complexity method, called the accelerated projected gradient (APG) method, which is derived from a gradient based method for nonconvex programming in [23]. A similar method has been used in [24] to solve the EEmax problem. In particular, the proposed method can deal with the four considered utility functions in a unified framework.…”
