First identification of natural infection of Rickettsia rickettsii in the Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick, in the State of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract: The Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is a zoonotic disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks of the genus Amblyomma, more frequently, Amblyomma cajennense. The aim of this paper was to report the first molecular detection of R. rickettsii on R. sanguineus naturally infected in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ticks were collected from dogs in a rural region of Resende municipality, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22º30'9.46"S, 44º42'44.29"WO), where occurred five human cases of BSF in 2006. The ticks … Show more

“…This close proximity to humans makes R. sanguineus the most implicated pathogens in diseases dispersions, such as spotted fever on America (R. rickettsii) (10,11), mediterranean spotted fever (Rickettsia conorii) (12) and canine ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis) (13). In Panama, genetic material of R. amblyommii has been found in R. sanguineus (14), species implicated to cause a mild fever, even when its impact to humans is unknown in many counties.…”

“…Amblyomma aureolatum is considered the main vector of R. rickettsii in the São Paulo region (19) and has been reported to frequently parasitize dogs in counties (Nazaré Paulista and Mairiporã) close to the study region (20) . Moreover, based on the molecular characterization of R. rickettsii in R. sanguineus in Brazil, the possible risk of an active, or even an indirect, participation of R. sanguineusin the transmission of R. rickettsii to humans cannot be excluded (21) . In addition, a potential risk of transmission of BSF or other rickettsial infectionsviaparasitized dogs cannot be ruled out.…”
