First Identification of Late Permian Nb‐Enriched Basalts in Ailaoshan Region (SW Yunnan, China): Contribution From Emeishan Plume to Subduction of Eastern Paleotethys

Abstract: Interactions between ocean plate subduction and the nearby mantle plume represent a possible major drive for mantle heterogeneity. We first report Late Permian (~261 Ma) Nb‐enriched basalts (NEBs) in the Ailaoshan region. The Ailaoshan NEBs are characterized by high Nb (10.1–11.5 ppm) and Nb/La (1.2–1.3), positive Nb‐Ta anomalies and εNd(t) (+5.65 to +6.21), and low and mantle‐like zircon δ18O (5.28–5.75‰). Our results demonstrate that the source region contains an enriched mantle component, which may have der… Show more

“…Previous studies have mainly focused on the geochronological evidence from igneous and metamorphic rocks in the region (Lepvrier et al, ; H. Liu et al, ; J. Liu et al, ; Nakano et al, , ; Xu, Xia, Lai, et al, ; Zi et al, ), whereas little attention was paid to the well‐exposed Triassic sedimentary sequences. Detrital zircon grains are extremely resistant mineral, and they are known to survive extended cycles of weathering and crustal recycling (Williams, ).…”

“…In addition, the late Permian (ca. 261 Ma) Nb‐rich basalts in the Ailaoshan area and the low δ 18 O A‐type granites in southwestern China also indicate that the southwestern margin of the SCB experienced the subduction of the Ailaoshan Ocean (Xu et al, 2022; Xu, Xia, Lai, Zhou, & Ma, 2019). There is also evidence of the subduction of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean on the northern side of the CQF.…”

“…Subduction of the Eastern Paleo-Tethys has been attributed by some authors to contribute to the end-Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province (LIP) (Xu et al, 2019). The Emeishan LIP has hosted many magmatic Fe-Ti-V oxide and Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits, yet its spatial continuation to the SE (e.g., in Guangxi and NW Vietnam) is still inadequately constrained (Halpin et al, 2016).…”
