First Downhole Application of Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Hydraulic-Fracturing Monitoring and Diagnostics

Abstract: Summary The first exploration-and-production downhole field trial of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) fiber-optic technology was conducted during the completion of a tight gas well in February 2009. DAS is a novel technology that allows the detection, discrimination, and location of acoustic events on a standard telecom single-mode fiber several kilometers long. Using a combination of the measurement of backscattered light and advanced signal processing, the DAS interrogator sys… Show more

“…Observations from substantial amounts of field data show that generally 25% or more of the fractures placed are ineffective. In fact, recent fracture stimulation surveillance with advance technologies such as microseismic monitoring and fibre optics temperature and strain sensing [4][5][6] have shown that multiple fractures do not grow and develop in the same way. Some of the fractures are pre-maturely 'terminated' during the treatment.…”

“…ISTRIBUTED fiber acoustic sensing technology based on Φ-OTDR has been researched extensively in recent years and has been widely used in the fields of oil and gas exploration, national defense, security and so on [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Φ-OTDR uses the highly coherent optical source to replace the broadband light source in the traditional OTDR, it's a kind of coherent OTDR technology.…”

“…Many numerical approaches (Narasimhan and Palen 1979;Bennett et al 1983;Berumen et al 2000) and semianalytical solutions (Resurreicão and Fernando 1991;Rodriguez et al 1992;Wang et al 2013) have been reported to discuss the effect of the AF on the transient-pressure behavior.
