Phase-Sensitive Optical Time Domain Reflectometer Based on Phase-Generated Carrier Algorithm

Abstract: We propose a novel approach to generate distributed fiber sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) and phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulationalgorithm. An unbalanced Michelson interferometer is introduced at the receiving end of the system. The back Rayleigh scattering light from a certain position along the sensing fiber would interfere to generate interference light signal versus time, whose phase carries the sensing information. Phase generated carrier demodulat… Show more

“…As a matter of fact, the interference characteristic is caused by the accumulation of Rayleigh backscattering lightwaves' optical path differences while these scattered lightwaves are reflected from the scattered particles. Conversely, we can retrieve the statistical phase from these OTDR traces [4][5][6]. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between the phase change and the external perturbation acting on the fiber [7].…”

“…The reflection spectrum is the intrinsic features of UWFBGs, except the central wavelength and reflection intensity, other features aren't be effected by outer physical factors. Meanwhile, the structure of the OTDR system in this paper only adds one tunable filter contrast with traditional OTDR system [12][13], and only the relative parameters are needed during the measuring procedure. Hence, the measuring system based on this technique is more stable than other methods using special optical components [6][7].…”
