First Description of an Escherichia coli Strain Producing NDM-1 Carbapenemase in Spain

Abstract: A carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strain (DVR22) was recovered from a stool specimen from a patient with traveler's diarrhea who had traveled to India. Molecular screening led to the first identification of NDM-1 in Spain. The bla NDM-1 gene was located in a conjugative plasmid of ca. 300 kb that also contained the bla CTX-M-15 , bla TEM-1 , ⌬bla DHA-1 , and armA genes. In addition, bla NDM-1 was preceded by an ISAba125 insertion element only found in Acinetobacter spp.The emergence of carbapenem resista… Show more

“…BlaOXA-48 carbapenemases belong to Ambler class D. The prevalence of CPE in Spain remains low and is mainly related to VIM-producing isolates (Sánchez-Romero et al 2012). Nevertheless, KPC-2-, KPC-3-, NDM-1-, and OXA-48-producing Enterobacteriaceae were recently detected in Spain (Solé et al 2011). Fecal carriage of CPE isolates has been investigated rarely compared with carriage of isolates producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) (Tórtola et al 2005), particularly among patients not selected for their relation to outbreak cases.…”

“…Isolation of K. pneumoniae co-producing NDM-1 and CTX-M-15, as previously described (Poirel et al, 2011;Solé et al, 2011) is a relevant epidemiological issue because CTX-M-15 and NDM-1 may share a common source in the Indian subcontinent. Effective measures to control the spread of NDM-1 and other carbapenemases are strongly needed.…”
