Tissue analysis is commonly used in ecology and agronomy to portray plant nutrient signatures. Nutrient concentration data, or ionomes, belong to the compositional data class, i.e., multivariate data that are proportions of some whole, hence carrying important numerical properties. Statistics computed across raw or ordinary log-transformed nutrient data are intrinsically biased, hence possibly leading to wrong inferences. Our objective was to present a sound and robust approach based on a novel nutrient balance concept to classify plant ionomes. We analyzed leaf N, P, K, Ca, and Mg of two wild and six domesticated fruit species from Canada, Brazil, and New Zealand sampled during reproductive stages. Nutrient concentrations were (1) analyzed without transformation, (2) ordinary log-transformed as commonly but incorrectly applied in practice, (3) additive log-ratio (alr) transformed as surrogate to stoichiometric rules, and (4) converted to isometric log-ratios (ilr) arranged as sound nutrient balance variables. Raw concentration and ordinary log transformation both led to biased multivariate analysis due to redundancy between interacting nutrients. The alr- and ilr-transformed data provided unbiased discriminant analyses of plant ionomes, where wild and domesticated species formed distinct groups and the ionomes of species and cultivars were differentiated without numerical bias. The ilr nutrient balance concept is preferable to alr, because the ilr technique projects the most important interactions between nutrients into a convenient Euclidean space. This novel numerical approach allows rectifying historical biases and supervising phenotypic plasticity in plant nutrition studies.

Giombo persimmon seeds (GPS) (Diospyrus kaki L) were used as a novel low-cost adsorbent for the removal of Toluidine Blue dye (TB) from aqueous solution by batch contact adsorption mode at 25˚C. The GPS adsorbent was characterized by specific surface area (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermal analysis, point of zero charge, and Boehm titration techniques. The effects of initial pH of solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial dye concentration on TB adsorption were investigated. Kinetic data were evaluated by pseudo-first-order, pseudosecond-order, and Elovich models. The equilibrium adsorption was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips isotherms models. Desorption studies were also performed. The results indicated that the Elovich model agreed very well with the kinetic data. The equilibrium data of adsorption of TB onto GPS were better fitted using Sips isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was 34.73 mg g −1. Good regeneration (93.5%) of GPS adsorbent was obtained using 2.00 mol L −1 CH 3 COOH as eluent. The GPS adsorbent can be used in the future as an alternative low-cost adsorbent for the treatment of waters contaminated with TB dye.

Maturation and antioxidant activity of 'Giombo' and 'Rama Forte' persimmons produced in the Brazilian semiarid

The objective of this work was characterizing persimmons of the 'Giombo' and 'Rama Forte' cultivars harvested at different ripening stages in the Brazilian semiarid. Fruits were harvested at three ripening stages – green, semi-ripe and ripe – then evaluated for the following characteristics: fruit weight and diameter, skin and pulp color, fruit firmness, pulp pH, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, SSC/TA ratio, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, astringency index, and the contents of tannin, vitamin C, carotenoid, β-carotene, and total extractable polyphenols. Also, total antioxidant activity by the DPPH and ABTS methods and pectin methylesterase, and polygalacturonase enzyme activities were evaluated. Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design, one for each cultivar, with treatments consisting of different stages of maturation, with five replications of three fruits each. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the differences between the means were compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability. Fruit firmness and soluble solids content did not vary between maturation stages for any of the cultivars. However, the skin color index increased with advancing maturation for both 'Giombo' and 'Rama Forte'. The astringency index, the content of total extractable polyphenols, soluble tannins and the antioxidant capacity were lower in fruits harvested at the ripe stage, for both cultivars. It can be concluded that persimmons of the 'Giombo' and 'Rama Forte' cultivars present better physicochemical quality characteristics when harvested when ripe, with a totally yellow skin.
