“…Numerical simulation is a complementary and cost‐effective method to laboratory work, and numerical approaches have been carried out by different researchers to study CFRP‐strengthened systems 25–30 . For example, the FE analysis package, ABAQUS, has been widely used for the analysis of fatigue problems of CFRP‐repaired systems 31–35 . However, most of the studies have been in aerospace engineering and they concern the fatigue problems of aluminium components rather than steel.…”

“…The SIFs along the crack tip were extracted and the crack propagation life was then predicted by using the power‐law relationship. A similar simulation was carried out by Gu et al 35 The effects of a series of parameters, such as crack length, the number of CFRP layers and adhesive thickness on the SIF of cracked aluminium plate were investigated. The same 20‐node brick elements were used for the aluminium plate, CFRP patch and adhesive layer, and the brick elements similarly collapsed to wedge elements at the crack tip.…”

“…Analytical works by Rose (1981Rose ( , 1988 are applicable for cracked infinite orthotropic plates repaired with elliptical composite patches. The finite-element (FE) method has been the choice for more complex three-dimensional (3D) crack problems (Naboulsi and Mall 1996;Sun et al 1996;Ayatollahi and Hashemi 2007;Lam et al 2010;Gu et al 2011;Wang et al 2014).…”

“…These variations could be explained by the assumptions used in the kinetic approach [30]. In addition, the modeling framework for composite materials was validated in our previous work [7,53].…”
