Fine structure of the septal pore apparatus in Polyporus tomentosus, Poria latemarginata, and Rhizoctonia solani

Abstract: The septal pore apparatus was studied in Poria latemarginata, Polyporus tomentosus, and Rhizoctonia solani. Fixation by potassium permanganate was compared with fixation by glutaraldehyde – osmium tetroxide. Potassium permanganate reduced the size of the septal swelling about 50% and destroyed much of the internal integrity of the septal swelling. In glutaraldehyde – osmium tetroxide fixed material, a fibrillar network extended from the cross wall throughout the septal swelling. Except for this network, the se… Show more

“…As has been noted by other workers (Bracker and Butler 1963;Wilsenach and Kessel 1965;Setliff et al 1972), the electron-dense plates of the cross wall extend into the septal swelling and seem to flair abruptly adjacent to the inner portion of the septal swelling (Figs. 2,5,7,8).…”

“…The micrographs of Butler and Bracker (1970) and those of Setlilf et al (1972), moreover, clearly show that the morphology of parenthesomes may be variable. A continuum might exist from a condition where no parenthesome is present as in W. sebi and the ascomycetous yeasts (Icreger-van Rij and Veenhuis 19690, 19696, 1973) through a parenthesome with many gaps as in Rlzizoctonir~ solnni Kuehn (Butler and Bracker 1970;Setliff et al 1972) to a parenthesome with few or no gaps as in Pol~porus biennis (Moore and Marchant 1972).…”

“…These characters include descriptions of secretory products, wall differentiation, nuclear condition and the differentiation of specific cytoplasmic organelles such as Golgi and ER. The marked degree of ER differentiation among cystidia of species of Agaricomycetes has been stressed by many investigators (Setliff et al 1972, Thielke 1972, Thaler and Gailhofer 1981, Clémençon 2004. Because the number of taxa entered in the Database is small, full delineation of cystidial character states is far from resolved.…”
