Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Cutaneous Vascular Tumours

Abstract: We have studied 12 cutaneous vascular tumours by means of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC): six capillary haemangiomas, one cavernous haemangioma, one Masson's pseudo-angiosarcoma, two angiosarcomas, one benign haemangioendothelioma and one glomus tumour. We describe the main cytopathological findings and we discuss the differential diagnosis in each case. We consider that the cytopathological findings of the above lesions, evaluated in the context of the clinical findings, are sufficiently characteristi… Show more

“…The scattered spindled endothelial cells gave the impression of stromal cells and the clusters of round cells that had imbibed fibrin gave a false impression of multinucleate giant cells of GCT. The fact that endothelial cells in IPEH can imbibe fibrin has also been highlighted in another study [5]. The cytologic features of these 2 cases have been compared with other published cases (table 1).…”

“…The published cytologic literature describes a varied morphology leading to frequent misdiagnoses [3,4,5,6,7,8]. The case reported by García-Macías et al [4] was cytologically diagnosed as vascular mesenchymal tumor of suspected malignancy because of the polymorphic (two type) population of cells, prominent nucleoli, and occasional mitotic figures.…”
