Fine needle aspiration cytology aided categorisation of neuroblastic tumours: a report of two cases

Abstract: Pre‐treatment diagnosis of neuroblastic tumours is important, as they are known to undergo maturation following chemotherapy. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) plays a vital role in making pre‐operative diagnosis and categorisation of these tumours. Here we present two cases, one of ganglioneuroblastoma and the other of ganglioneuroma, diagnosed on FNAC.

“…Accurate assessment of the amount fibrillary and Schwannian stroma is also difficult both on smears and cellblock. Ganglioneuroma yields scanty stromal elements as we have reported in the past 10 . Yet, the distinction between ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma is essential because unlike ganglioneuroma, ganglioneuroblastoma can metastasize and requires chemotherapy.…”

“…In this scenario again LCA and synaptophysin performed on CB are the only reliable differentiating tools. We encountered three cases of GNB as well which has a more favourable outcome than NB 12 . NBs are the mostly immature and aggressive compared to GNBs.…”

“…2 Just as FNAC-based prechemotherapy categorization of neuroblastic tumours is important as they are well known to undergo spontaneous and induced maturation, likewise, HBs have also been seen to undergo a range of chemotherapyinduced changes including mature hepatocyte like area. 4,5 The surgically resected specimen after administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy can never represent the original tumour morphology. Therefore pretreatment diagnosis and categorization of HB is important with regard to prognosis and treatment.…”
