Solar water heaters (SWHs) are one of the most effective plans for general and easy use of solar energy to supply hot water in domestic and industrial sectors. This paper gives the first-ever attempts to assess the optimal localization of SWHs across 22 major cities in Zambia, as well as determine the possibility of hot water generation and model the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission saving. The climate data used is extracted by using the MeteoSyn software which is modeled in TSOL™. Results show the high potential of GHG emission reduction due to nonconsumption of fossil fuels owing to the deployment of SWHs, and three cities Kabwe, Chipata, and Mbala had the highest GHG mitigation by 1552.97 kg/y, 1394.8 kg/y, and 1321.39 kg/y, respectively. On average, SWHs provide 62.47% of space heating and 96.05% of the sanitary hot water requirement of consumers. The findings have shown the potential for the deployment of SWHs in Zambia. The techno-enviro study in this paper can be used by the policymakers of Zambia and countries with similar climates.

Power consumption of wellbore drilling in oil and gas exploitations count for 40% of total costs, hence power saving of WBM (water-based mud) by adding different concentrations of Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles is investigated here. A high-speed Taylor–Couette system (TCS) was devised to operate at speeds 0–1600 RPM to simulate power consumption of wellbore drilling using nanofluids in laminar to turbulent flow conditions. The TCS control unit uses several sensors to record current, voltage and rotational speed and Arduino microprocessors to process outputs including rheological properties and power consumption. Total power consumption of the TCS was correlated with a second-order polynomial function of rotational speed for different nanofluids, and the correlated parameters were found using an optimization technique. For the first time, energy saving of three nanofluids at four low volume concentrations 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1% is investigated in the TCS simulating wellbore drilling operation. It is interesting to observe that the lower concentration nanofluids (0.05%) have better power savings. In average, for the lower concentration nanofluids (0.05%), power was saved by 39%, 30% and 26% for TiO2, Al2O3 and SiO2 WBM nanofluids, respectively. TiO2 nanofluids have better power saving at lower concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1%, while Al2O3 nanofluids have saved more power at higher concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0% compared with their counterpart nanofluids.

Summary Due to population growth and industrial development, Iran is facing the challenge of energy supply in various industrial, power plant, agricultural, and residential sectors. While most of Iran's energy supply comes from fossil fuels, these fuels have devastating environmental impacts. Therefore, Iran has to invest more in its renewable energy sources. Given that many locations of Iran have significant wind, solar, and geothermal potential, this study used a combination of SWOT, multicriteria decision‐making approaches, and game theory to identify the best renewable energy development plans for the country. The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) technique was applied to weight the criteria and sub‐criteria. Impact on the environment, resource potential, and power generation cost with weights of 0.218, 0.182, and 0.145 was recognized as the most important sub‐criteria, respectively. To rank the factors in each SWOT dimension, namely, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, the Grey Additive Ratio ASsessment (ARAS‐Grey) method was then used. Using the game theory and fuzzy Shapley value, the best combination of renewable energy development strategies was determined to be SO1ST3WO1WT1 with a value of (1.72, 0.58, 0.3). The development of high‐efficiency wind and solar technologies and the minimization of output fluctuations and loss through energy storage methods such as hydrogen production and battery banks were identified as the best strategy combination for renewable energy development in Iran.
