This study aims to spotlight the postmodern tendency of metafiction in Preeti Shenoy’s selected texts. Metafiction is self-conscious in relation to language, literary form, and storytelling in fiction. This form of fiction accentuates its construct and reminds the readers to be aware of a fictional work. Shenoy is a noteworthy postmodern writer, and her famous novels are ‘The Secret Wish List’ (2012) and ‘It Happens for Reason’ (2014). These two novels exhibit the subject of postmodern metafiction through her writings. In these novels, the protagonists overcome their family doctrines to fulfill their wishes. The method of study adopted the metafiction theories proposed by Mark Currie, Patricia Waugh, and Linda Hutcheon. It highlights Shenoy’s texts that represent the elements of metafiction through the protagonists. Using various theories related to postmodern metafiction, the view of metafiction in the texts is substantiated and explored. The postmodern perspective of metafiction is explored in Shenoy’s texts and analyzed with metafiction theories. The study results are compared and discussed with other studies and contemporary texts concerning metafiction. The findings show that metafiction is applicable in the texts of the two novels by Shenoy. She projects the aspects of metafiction in her works through her writing, especially narration, both fiction and reality.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa traz reflexões sobre paratextos relacionados ao romance inglês Cloud Atlas (2004), de David Mitchell e o processo de paratradução dessa obra, publicada no Brasil como Atlas de Nuvens (2016). O lançamento da tradução desse romance foi amplamente divulgado por importantes canais de comunicação, com apoio especial da crítica literária especializada. No entanto, a obra ainda é pouco lida e analisada no âmbito acadêmico. Assim, trabalhamos especialmente com o conceito de paratradução de Yuste Frías (2014 e 2015) para verificar o papel desempenhado pelos paratextos na edição final dessa obra traduzida. As conclusões apontam para um repensar do processo tradutório, diretamente influenciado pelo conceito de paratradução. Também nos levam a refletir sobre a participação dos paratextos como importante elemento de análise no processo de tradução literária de uma obra.

David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas (2004) presents its readers with a "borderless world ." This borderlessness concerns space and time, with complex and interweaving spatiotemporal planes. In this fictional world, the subject will serve as an entity that brings together disparate spatialities and temporalities through an intricate symbolic web that connects the subject's body to the world it inhabits . Numerous versions of past, present, and future run in parallel, the actual and the virtual coexist, and the text folds upon itself . The novel operates a constant state of liminality, a state that will be embodied by the subject . Seemingly in a paradoxical way, the multiple liminal states identifiable in the novel convey the ultimate sense of borderlessness . It is exactly the work's heterogeneity, its jumps through time and space, its interrupted chapter structure that lend it a special unity and coherence that erases both geographical and temporal borders . The novel's structure goes into thematic depths and creates a bridge, a constant interplay between form and content, captured in the metaphor of the concertina . Consequently, Cloud Atlas creates a constantly shifting world where the only fixed entity is the subject and its comet-shaped birthmark.
