Final Report on the Safety Assessment of Sorbitan Caprylate, Sorbitan Cocoate, Sorbitan Diisostearate, Sorbitan Dioleate, Sorbitan Distearate, Sorbitan Isostearate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Sesquiisostearate, Sorbitan Sesquistearate, and Sorbitan Triisostearate

Abstract: Sorbitan fatty acid esters are mono-, di-, and triesters of fatty acids and sorbitol-derived hexitol anhydrides. They function as surfactants in cosmetic formulations. Previously, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel had reviewed the safety of several of these sorbitan fatty acid esters (Sorbitan Laurate, Sorbitan Oleate, Sorbitan Palmitate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Sorbitan Stearate, Sorbitan Trioleate, and Sorbitan Tristearate). This safety assessment is an addendum to that report that includes So… Show more

“…We also observed that the presence of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ induces strong aggregation of liposomes (0.5–5 μm) but we have obtained optimal results in the prevention of this phenomenon by adding a biocompatible stabilizing agent like Tween-20. We chose Tween-20 due to its low cost, biodegradability and biocompatibility [ 29 , 30 ] and the tendency of non-ionic surfactant molecules to promote the formation of stable liposomes [ 31 ]. In order to proceed with future drug delivery uses, we focused only on the liposomal formulation that achieved 100% encapsulation efficiency.…”

“…Thus, this report provides the toxicological evaluation of PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate as a cosmetic ingredient. The toxicological data of PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate were estimated based on its chemical analogues including glyceryl triisostearate, sorbitan sesquiisostearate, and PEG-20 sorbitan fatty acid esters ( Table 2 ) (15 - 17) . Although these chemicals do not contain all of the functional groups present in PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate, some properties of PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate can be approximated using the component chemicals.…”

“…Commercially called "Tween", polyethoxylated sorbitan monoesters are surfactants ideal for creating oil-in-water emulsions due to their hydrophilicity. 68,69 Sorbitan esters mainly find use as emulsifiers in pharmaceuticals, foods, 3,71 cosmetic products, 72−74 emulsion polymerization, 75 explosives, and other specific applications. In contrast to traditional nonionic surfactants, sucrose fatty acid esters' hydrophilic−lipophilic balance (HLB) may be altered by switching from one to eight fatty acid residues attached to a sucrose ring.…”
