Final Report of the Safety Assessment of L-Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Ascorbate, Magnesium Ascorbate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Ascorbate, and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate as Used in Cosmetics1

Abstract: L-Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Ascorbate, Magnesium Ascorbate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Ascorbate, and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate function in cosmetic formulations primarily as antioxidants. Ascorbic Acid is commonly called Vitamin C. Ascorbic Acid is used as an antioxidant and pH adjuster in a large variety of cosmetic formulations, over 3/4 of which were hair dyes and colors at concentrations between 0.3% and 0.6%. For other uses, the reported concentrations were either very low (<0.01%) or in the 5% to… Show more

“…Crab meat spoilage is predominately due to the activity of bacteria such as Pseudomonas spp., Clostridium spp., lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and hydrogen disulphide producing bacteria. This could be prevented by including a preservative such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which has ‘generally regarded as safe’ (GRAS) status for use in foods [ 15 ]. Moreover, it is particularly suitable for use in crab-based food products as it is naturally present in crab meat [ 16 ] and has been previously used to preserve seafood [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Of note, there were 10 samples reported with skin problems but allergy test negativity, implying that some other adverse effects of the products could occur, instead of allergy. For example, skin irritation was also commonly reported, due to the usage of cosmetic products. , Nevertheless, two SCP samples, i.e., SCP-9 and -15, had no complaints from the customers, while they were allergy test positive. This could happen because of interindividual variations in skin reactivity to allergen exposure, , and the samples with allergy test positivity from the h-CLAT assay are sometimes not necessary to guarantee the occurrence of adverse skin reaction in users but implicate the high risk of its incidence among the human population.…”
