Filtering Out Standard Success Criteria in the Case of Multi-Mode Standardization: Responsible Waste Water Treatment

Abstract: Standardization can be achieved in multiple ways; firms may join forces and develop standards in standardization committees, they may compete directly on the market in standards battles, or governmental agencies may impose standards. This paper studies criteria for the selection of standards in a situation in which these three forms of standardization occur simultaneously (multi-mode standardization). The paper attempts to arrive at weights for these criteria by applying them to the case of phosphorus recovery… Show more

“…To decrease internal transaction costs, recurrent games among module makers are used to progressively establish rules, standards, and contracts. Simultaneously, modular network organizations are often governed by several parties led by technical leaders [ 60 ]. Through various alignments, intermediate product contracts and factor contracts are blended into a dynamic network of contracts with low transaction costs and high innovation capacity across companies and countries under the authority of industry standards or system rule makers [ 61 ].…”

“…One user's decision to adopt a given technology standard indirectly influences the future adoption decisions of other users, by forming a large installed base through the accumulation of users [94], [95]. The combination of a large user base and the wide availability of complementary products accelerates adoption by users [96], [97]. In particular, a large installed base attracts users who have risk-averse inclination [97].…”
