This paper aims to analyze the potential of the Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) strategy to empower the lower-middle-class people and analyze the recommended strategy for making economic empowerment through more effective and efficient Islamic microfinance. This research uses the in-depth interview method and SWOT analysis as further analysis. The results indicated that BMT has great potential, especially in human resources development and a clear market share to empower the lower classes of society. However, it is necessary to have an appropriate economic empowerment model following the conditions of the lower classes of society and the need for government roles to support the existence of an Islamic microfinance institution in the form of Baitul Maal wat Tamwiil (BMT). Several economic empowerment strategies have been implemented by Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT). This study adds the existing literature related to Islamic microfinance's role to have the suitable model that efficiently and effectively empowers the poor Indonesian society, especially those who live in Yogyakarta.

Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT) is an Islamic MicrofinanceInstitution that has two main functions, namely as collectors, distributors, utilization of zakat funds, infaq, alms, waqf and can function as productive economic empowerment that provides financial services using sharia principles. . Its presence in the community has a significant impact on the Indonesian economy, especially in the field of microeconomics. This research was made using a qualitative descriptive method to analyze, summarize, and describe its role in the development of Islamic economics. Through SWOT analysis and interviews with respondents on mudarabah financing, it is shown that BMT has an important role in increasing micro-enterprises and improving economic development in Indonesia, although it still has several weaknesses. This institution encourages the economic growth of the community through financing to microenterprises that need funds for their business capital.Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT) merupakan Lembaga Keuangan Mikro Islam yang memiliki dua fungsi utama, yaitu sebagai penghimpun, penyalur, pendayagunaan dana zakat, infaq, sedekah, waqaf serta dapat berfungsi sebagai pemberdayaan ekonomi produktif yang menyediakan jasajasa keuangan dengan menggunakan prinsip syariah. Keberadaannya di tengah masyarakat memiliki dampak yang cukup berarti terhadap perekonomian Indonesia terutama di bidang ekonomi mikro. Riset ini dibuat menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis, merangkum, menggambarkan perannya terhadap perkembangan ekonomi syariah. Melalui analisis SWOT dan wawancara responden terhadap pembiayaan mudarabah menunjukkan bahwa BMT memiliki peran penting dalam meningkatkan usaha mikro dan meningkatkan perkembangan ekonomi di Indonesia walaupun masih memiliki beberapa kelemahan. Institusi ini mendorong tumbuhnya ekonomi masyarakat melalui pembiayaan kepada usaha mikro yang membutuhkan dana untuk modal usahanya.

This research generally describes the application of performance measurement in Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) based on orientation to benefit all stakeholders (stakeholders & shareholders), but studies that specifically measure aspects of the methodology for implementing performance measurement are still limited. Therefore, Maslahah Performa is used as an instrument in the application of performance measurement in BMT Umat Mandiri. The study aims to determine the implementation of performance measurement Maslahah Performa issues on BMT Umat Mandiri. Knowing the results of the analysis of the application of process performance measurement and benefit-based performance results in BMT Umat Mandiri. The methodology used in this study is qualitative and quantitative research methods with case study design. The research findings indicate that six benefit orientations exist in BMT Umat Mandiri. These orientations include worship, internal processes, talents, learning, customers, and property. The six orientations found in this research have a foundation of benefit in realizing strategic objectives for the achievement of benefit. BMT Umat Mandiri has a process performance of 0,400 and performance results of 0,656 which means that BMT Umat Mandiri provides less benefit to stakeholders.
