Fifteen years of GSS in the field: a comparison across time and national boundaries

Abstract: It has been over two decades since Group Support Systems (GSS) emerged on the Information Technology (IT) scene. GSS have now been commercialized and are present in an increasing number of domestic and international contexts but only lightly studied in real organizational settings. A criticism of studies has been that many of the organizations involved had a vested interest in the outcome that extended beyond that which would normally occur in a typical organization.

“…The characteristics of such systems (Bostrom, Watson, & Kinney, 1992) are that they offer parallel communication tools to gather many viewpoints (Fjermestad & Hiltz, 2001;de Vreede et al, 2003), that they are anonymous, enabling a feeling of safety, and more open communication (Nunamaker et al, 1997;Wilson & Jessup, 1995), and that they offer electronic recording and processing of contributions (Bostrom, Watson, & Kinney, 1992). Because of these characteristics, various advantages of group work, e.g.…”

“…can be diminished. Because of this, a higher level of productivity and a better quality of results can be achieved (Fjermestad & Hiltz, 2001;Nunamaker et al, 1997;de Vreede et al, 2003). Collaborative learning using these technologies reports similar advantages (Dillenbourg, 1999;Johnson & Johnson, 1994), but does not necessarily adhere democratic principles.…”

“…De Vreede et al [17] conclude from extensive research that 15 years after the introduction of the first group support system, these systems indeed provide added value to meetings. They are said to provide savings, and increase efficiency.…”

“…After the collection of all the literature data, expert views are needed to enrich, assess and evaluate the identified practices in more detail, using a Group Support System (GSS) Expert groups make it possible to elicit views and perceptions from a diverse group of experts [34] [35]. The role of the facilitator is important in order to avoid the "Asch Effect" where certain individuals dominate group dynamics and therefore the outcome of the discussion [36].…”
