Field Trial Proves Upgrades to Solid Expandable Tubulars

Abstract: A 3,142-ft length of solid expandable openhole liner was installed successfully in a BP-operated well in November 2001. This established an industry record length and demonstrated two improvements:654 ft of liner were simultaneously expanded and pumped to the bottom of the well without the need to stop to make connections;a sliding sleeve valve permitted cement placement postexpansion prior to drill-out. These improvements delivered significant time savings and offer reduced risk plus greater… Show more

“…If the cone is pulled mechanically, pressure induced collapse loads are eliminated but there can be several feet of movement above the drill floor as the work string shortens from below and the drilling lines shorten at surface upon sudden release of tension. 7 The expansion procedure requires a high-pressure pumping unit capable of rates ranging from 0.25 to 3.0 barrels per minute (bpm) at pressures up to 6,000 pounds per square inch (psi) and an adequate supply of clean workover fluid.…”

“…A growing body of literature describes expandable tubulars mechanics, applications and field case histories. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The technology -whether applied to openhole drilling liners, cased hole liners or expandable liner hangers -has demonstrated high success in establishment of effective pressure seals between base casing and the expanded tubulars. This capability can be utilized to install expandable tubular patches in wells with corrosion leaks in the production casing.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] The scoping mechanism in SET expansion occurs initially in all SET installations. Hydraulic pressure in the cone launcher forces the expandable tube downward across the upward-facing cone for several feet until the cone launcher contacts the bottom of the hole.…”
