Field scale row unit vibration affecting planting quality

Abstract: With recent developments allowing increased planter speeds, improving spatial uniformity of crop emergence will continue to be an important focus of research. Vertical vibration during planting usually interferes with the seed metering and delivery process, and thereby affects seeding quality. Two different row crop planters were instrumented with accelerometers to monitor vertical vibration of planter row units in five fields with a total area of 220 ha in both no-till and strip-tilled conditions. The test re… Show more

“…Many academics have embraced this strategy since it can faithfully and correctly simulate the research process [35]. The results of the simulation test demonstrate that vibration will weaken the seeding performance (seeding uniformity), which is in line with the findings of Kuş [29] and Zhai [30] et al Vibration also alters the seed layer height, which has a significant effect on seed-sowing quality [36][37][38][39].…”

“…They found that the seed falling trajectory and seed falling point were gradually dispersed, and the seed-dropping range expanded with an increase in vibration. Kuş and Zhai et al reported that vibration and amplitude were correlated with forward speed, and the vibrations increased the variability of planting [29,30]. To decrease the influence of vibration on seeding performance, Wang et al used a combination of a suction drum and a vibrating seed plate to manage seed suction [31].…”

“…The results published by other authors (Zhai et al, 2020;Yazgi, 2007;Turan et al, 2014;Kowalczuk et al, 2017) show that seed damage is mainly affected by the dimensional and strength properties of the seed and the chosen type of planting mechanism. In view of the above, it was decided to compare the two most widely used types of planting mechanisms used on sugar beet planters, namely the mechanical planting mechanism with internal filling and the pneumatic vacuum type.…”
