Based on the preliminary evidence of volcanoes, hot springs, and Geysers in parts of Nigeria, it is proposed that deep geothermal wells can be found in Nigeria. This research uses thermal anomalies zones to identify types of geothermal wells in Nigeria, i.e., using remote sensing and modified thermal equations. The remote sensing dataset includes the ground heat flux (GHF) dataset from Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) of 28 years; sediment thickness dataset from EarthData; and surface geology from LANDSAT. The thermal transport model was used to narrow potential locations across Nigeria using the ground heat flux and sediment thickness, while the surface geology was used to confirm the deep geothermal zones. Four GHF patterns were discovered in Nigeria. The research shows that the deep geothermal wells might be located in Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Ekiti, Kogi, Benue, Nassarawa, and Taraba. Also, the medium-depth geothermal wells may be located in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kastina, Kwara, Oyo, and Jigawa States. It was revealed that the southern parts of Nigeria have lots of shallow geothermal wells. The deep geothermal wells can be found in the Chad Basin and Benue trough, while the medium-depth geothermal wells can be found in the Sokoto basin, Bida basin, and parts of the lower Benue trough. It is recommended that further ground trotting exploration be carried out in the identified geographical locations.

The Neoproterozoic charnockite-granite association of Okpella intrudes metasedimentary and migmatite-gneiss complex rocks in the eastern Igarra Schist Belt, southwestern Nigeria. In order to unravel the complex processes involved in the formation and tectonic evolution of the Igarra Schist Belt during the Neoproterozoic, detailed field, petrographic and whole-rock geochemical study of the charnockite-granite association and metasedimentary rocks around Okpella was conducted. Published data on the metasedimentary rocks and Pan-African granitoids in different sectors of the belt were also compiled for detailed interpretations. Results of the study revealed that the charnockites and granites of Okpella show primary magmatic mineralogy and geochemical characteristics. They are silicic ( 63 wt. % SiO2), metaluminous to peraluminous, high-K calcalkaline, ferroan, post-collisional granitoids. The garnet-biotite schist, calc-silicate gneiss and quartzite in the area have paragenesis characteristic of low-medium grade metasedimentary rocks. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the charnockites suggest that the charnockitic melt was derived by partial melting of underplated basaltic (mantle-derived) magma and assimilation-fractionation processes at lower crustal levels.The granites probably originated from mixed melts derived from lower-to mid-crustal tonalites-trondhjemitesgranodiorites and/or subducted metagreywackes and mantle-derived magmas (probably the charnockitic melt progenitor). The granites and charnockites are coeval and were presumably emplaced during the post-collisional stages of the Pan-African Orogeny. The garnet-biotite schist, calc-silicate gneiss and quartzite represent 1 metamorphosed immature to slightly mature sedimentary rocks, probably greywacke, marl and subarkose, respectively, that were sourced from intermediate-acidic rocks which underwent low-moderate chemical weathering with minor contribution from recycled sediment sources and deposited in active continental environments. The Neoproterozoic evolution of the Igarra Schist Belt, therefore, involved deposition and infolding of sediments in active continental margin during the early Pan-African followed by upwelling of basaltic magma from the mantle which underplated the lower crust to generate the charnockitic and granitic melts through mantle-crust interaction during the late Pan-African.

Field, studies and geological mapping on a scale of 1:50000 were carried out to determine the lithologic framework and structural features of the Basement Complex rocks in northern parts of the Kushaka and Birnin Gwari schist belts (Kushaka Sheet 122). The area is underlain predominantly by five main rock types mainly (i) Migmatite-Gneiss-Quartzite suite comprising dioritic, granodioritic and granitic gneisses with fissile and ferruginous quartzites and banded iron formations (BIF); (ii) Kushaka graphite and sulphur bearing biotite and muscovite quartz schist inter-banded in places with iron formations; (iii) Birnin Gwari biotite-staurolite quartz schist; iv) the Kushaka Gneiss Complex composed of basalts (which is being reported for the first time), staurolite and muscovite gneisses and banded iron formations (BIF), and (v) syn-tectonic and late-orogenic biotite-hornblende syenite (BHS) and biotite-hornblende granite (BHG) in the Kushaka schist belt and biotite muscovite granite (BMG) in the Birnin Gwari schist belt area. Petrographic studies have revealed that essential minerals are quartz, K-feldspars (orthoclase, microcline), plagioclase, pyroxene, epidote, hornblende, biotite and muscovite while the accessory minerals are titanite, zircon, apatite, iron oxide (magnetite and hematite). With pyroxenes occurring in the dioritic and granodioritic rocks, metamorphism may have locally reached grannulite facies. Imprints of Pan-African thermo-tectonic events have shown observable migmatization as the first thermo-tectonic event resulting in plastic deformation D1 and regional S1 foliation, demostrated by presence of tight isoclinals fold, compositional banding and N -S preferred orientation of mafic minerals. The D2 deformation is co-axial with D1 and resulted in the formation of decimeter sized F2 isoclinal folds, B2 boudins and eye ball structures that are parallel to S1 plane schistocity. Strike-slip faults with dextral sense of movements were mapped in a number of places. D3 deformation is concentrated in the Kushaka Gneiss Complex with near circular deep fractures south of the Kalangai fault. Here granitization and fragmentation of proto-mylonitic staurolite resulted in brittle deformation and F3 open fold that refolded or transposed the earlier tight isoclinal F2 folds. The D4 deformation resulted in N-S and NW-SE quartz veins and pegmatite dykes which serve as channels for epigenetic gold-sulphide and rare metal bearing ore fluids.
