Field occurrence and structural characteristics of basement rocks around Kabba-Bunu Area in part of Kabba-Lokoja-Igarra Schist Belt, southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Field and structural mapping on a scale of 1:50000 was carried out to determine the lithologic and structural features in the Kabba-Bunu area of the Kabba-Lokoja-Igarra schist belt. The area is underlain predominantly by migmatiteschist suite comprising migmatite gneiss, migmatised schist and a quartz-mica schist-quartzite complex in which quartzite occurs as elongated ridges especially around Aiyegunle-Iluke-Olle and Osomule-Ofere areas. The migmatite-schist suite is interbanded in some places by short lenses… Show more

“…The rock formation in Kwara includes migmatitic gneiss, quartzite, quartz-mica schist, talc-tremolite schist, porphyroblastic granite, porphyritic granite, coarse-grained alkali granite, medium-grained granodiorite, mediumgrained alkali granite, alkali syenite, pegmatite/aplite and vein quartz [21,31]. Taraba and Benue state sits on the Benue Trough.…”

“…The Nigerian basement records polycyclic tectonic evolution and polyphase deformations during the Precambrian (Rahaman 1976(Rahaman , 1988Odeyemi 1981;Ajibade et al 1987;Ekwueme and Kalsbeek 2014). As a result of these deformations, complex structures are associated with the basement rocks (Ekwueme 1987;Oluyide 1988;Kolawole et al 2017). The last and most penetrative orogenic event (Pan-African orogeny) that affected the Nigerian basement produced an approximately NS structural trend in the rocks (Rahaman 1988;Ferré et al 1996;Obaje 2009).…”

“…The NE-SW and NW-SE conjugate sets are mostly strike slip faults with the north eastern set characterized by dextral sense of movements (Garba, 2002;Okunlola and Okoroafor, 2009). Mineralizations such as iron-ore, gold quartz vein carrying galena and pyrite are generally confined within the N-S to NNE-SSW brittle structures (Goki et al, 2010;Kolawole et al, 2017).…”
