Field Experience with an Active Stick-Slip Prevention System

Abstract: Stick-slip oscillations are self-sustained and periodic twist and torque oscillations of a rotating drill string, characterized by large and harmful variations of the downhole rotation speed. This paper is a field evaluation of an active stick-slip prevention system. The evaluated system is active with smart control of the top drive, meaning the top drive speed is varied in a way that dampens stick-slip oscillations. It is software based, in many cases it requires no extra instrumentation and can be implemented… Show more

“…torsional resonance modes play a role in the onset of stickslip oscillations [18], [19]. A different modeling approach is taken in [11] and [20]- [25], where infinite-dimensional models, i.e., formulated in terms of partial or delay differential equations, are considered.…”

“…Said from a software control system perspective; the top drive's speed set point is moved from the surface down to the bit to minimize the RPM oscillations downhole. The efficacy of such a system has been extensively documented in recent years (Nessjoen 2011, Ertas 2013, Runia 2013, Attar 2014, Efteland 2014. The stick-slip software in this paper is based on Kyllingstad (2009).…”
