Field Evaporation of a Screw Dislocation in Tungsten

Abstract: A complex crystal defect in tungsten has been examined in detail by means of the field ion microscope. Field evaporation has been employed to remove the metal surface, making visible the three-dimensional structure of the defect. The defect has been identified as a grain boundary appearing in(1̄16) of one grain and(11̄6) of the other, so that the grains are misoriented by an angle of 26.5° rotation about the direction [110], which corresponds to the axis of the wire sample.
