Fibroepithelial Ureteral Polyps

Abstract: Two cases of fibroepithelial polyps of the ureter are reported. In one case the polyp was protruding through the meatus of the urethra whereas in the other case no clinical manifestations were observed. Both benign tumors were treated by local surgery. Etiology, clinical features, diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

“…Obstruction, infection, trauma, chronic irritation, hormonal imbalance and developmental defects are mentioned as possible causes (Reichle and others 2003). Human cases of UFEP have been reported in the paediatric age group and even in neonates (Stukart and others 1984), including two cases associated with congenital ureteral diverticulum (Franco and others 1988). In veterinary patients, an association with urinary tract infection is possible, with two previously reported cases having positive urine cultures (Reichle and others 2003).…”

“…The value of angiography especially in the differentiation of mesodermal and epithelial tumors has not been established [6,12]. Among all invasive diagnostic procedures ureteroscopy delivers the most precise information, making it possible to obtain cytology and histologic specimens simultaneously.…”

“…The association of inverted papillomas with areas of transitional cell tumors could represent precancerous lesions [15]. No metastatic disease in patients with fibroepithelial polyps is known [6]; however, one single description of a malignant transformation of transitional cell epithelioma exists [3]. Thus there is less generally recommended operative procedure is open exploration and partial resection of the ureter.…”

“…Petkovic (17) berichtete über 35 Fälle mit bilateralen ureteralen Tumoren. Dabei handelt es sich meistens um maligne Transitionalzellkarzinome, seltener um benigne Papillome (22). Eine bilaterale Obstruktion wurde auch bei endoureteraler Endometriose in der Postmenopause beschrieben (18).…”
