Childhood obesity is a medical condition of major public health concern. Chia seeds are used to treat certain noncommunicable diseases, and they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to the absorption of vitamins. A randomized double-blind clinical trial of 30 obese children was performed. The sample was composed of prepubertal 5-to 10year-old children of both sexes with body mass indexes equal to or above the 95th percentile who were recruited through the Pediatric Department of the Faculdade de Medicina do ABC. Blood samples were drawn, the children were weighed and measured, and a 24-h dietary recall was obtained before and after the treatment. Not only were significant differences observed for fibrinogen (P = .011) but a correlation between the changes in markers and the presence of fibers was also observed for two inflammatory parameters: tumor necrosis factor-a (P = .027) and nuclear factor-jb (P = .059). These results indicate that chia seeds may have anti-inflammatory effects related to their fiber content in the context of childhood obesity.

Ranije studije su pokazale više vrednosti fibrinogena kod gojaznih, u poređenju sa normalno uhranjenim osobama. Ipak, nedovoljno je rasvetljen mehanizam povezanosti fibrinogena sa kardiometaboličkim faktorima rizika koji prate gojaznost. Zato je cilj ove studije bio da se ispita ova povezanost u populaciji predgojaznih/gojaznih žena u postmenopauzi. Metode: U ovom istraživanju je bilo uključeno 100 predgojaznih/gojaznih žena u postmenopauzi. Svim ispitanicama meren je krvni pritisak i izvršena su antropometrijska merenja koja su obuhvatila merenje telesne visine, telesne mase i obima struka; izračunat je i indeks telesne mase (ITM). Određivani su sledeći biohemijski parametri: fibrinogen, glikemija, (insulinska rezistencija (HOMA-IR) je izračunata), lipidni status (ukupni holesterol, trigliceridi, LDL-holesterol, HDL-holesterol, odnos trigliceridi/HDL-holesterol, non-HDL-holesterol). Rezultati: Podelom fibrinogena na tercilne vrednosti, u drugoj i trećoj tercilnoj grupi uočene su više vrednosti ITM (P=0,039), obima struka (P=0,002), insulina (P=0,005), HOMA-IR (P=0,006), trigliceridi (P=0,001), odnos trigliceridi/HDL-holesterol (P=0,002) i non-HDL-holesterol (P=0,014) u poređenju sa prvom tercilnom grupom, tj. grupom sa najnižim vrednostima fibrinogena. Primenom višestruke linearne regresije, najveći uticaj na varijabilitet fibrinogena pokazali su HOMA-IR (beta=0,225; p=0,007) i nivo triglicerida (beta=0,188; p=0,023), (R2=0,213; p<0,001). Zaključak: Fibrinogen može biti koristan marker za procenu kardiometaboličkog rizika kod gojaznih žena u postmenopauzi. Ključne reči: inflamacija, fibrinogen, gojaznost, kardiometabolički rizik, menopauza. Summary:Higher fibrinogen levels may play an important role in cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women. Previous studies have reported its higher levels in obese individuals, as compared with normal weight counterparts. However, the mechanism of the relationship between fibrinogen and cardiometabolic risk factors is not well elucidated.
