Fibrin Sealant Reduces Pain after Tonsillectomy: Prospective Randomized Study

Abstract: The combined sEMG and pain score data indicate that the electrocautery hemostatic technique is more painful and traumatic than the sealant technique. Surface electromyography of swallowing is a simple, reliable evaluation method for postsurgical odynophagia complaints and might be used as an objective tool for pain assessment.

“…IL-6, and TNF-a elevation have also been associated with acute sickness behavior, depression, and anxiety in humans [16]. Recently, studies have assessed variables such as pain, dysphagia, and bleeding based on questionnaires and re-hospitalization follow up to evaluate the efficacy of fibrin glue in reducing pain and bleeding [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The outcome of these studies is controversial, because some authors claim the glue is effective in reducing pain and bleeding [1,4,5,17], while others claimed it to be ineffective [3,6].…”

“…Discrepancies among Quixil studies regarding clinical outcome may be associated with the haemostatic technique. While some authors used the fibrin glue as a haemostatic agent [1,4], others first used cauterization for hemostasis, causing more tissue damage, and then sprayed the glue [3][4][5][6].…”

“…This is mainly due to the number of spontaneously dissolved seroma and hematoma found upon precise examination postoperatively at 2 weeks. The primary endpoint of chronic pain was expected to be low due to less nerve damage by sutures and improved hemostasis (thus not leading to a complication as this is associated with pain) by the autologous P-RFS [8,19] . Considerable pain and sensory disturbances were reported, emphasizing the main complication of pain following inguinal hernia repair.…”
