Fiber-Optical Power Limiter and Cut-Off Switch Based on Thermo-Optical Effect

Abstract: In this letter, the fiber-optical power limiter and cut-off switch based on liquid core optical fiber (LCOF) is presented. As a core medium in the silica fiber, the Cargille mineral oil is used. In the metal coated tapered LCOF, a thermo-optical effect is employed. Attenuation exceeding 20 dB and response of 1.5 ms was documented by measurements.Index Terms-Optical fiber applications, optical fiber devices, thermo-optical devices.
